Business Intelligence Report Developer
Roles and Responsibilities
Our transportation client’s Business Technology Services (BTS) division requires the following positions to augment our CMBC EAM Project Report team. This position will be required for a certain period up to seven (7) months beginning March 2025. The successful candidate will report to the Project Manager and Report Lead and work closely with other members of the CMBC EAM project team, BTS, and other our transportation client departments.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND BACKGROUND: The CMBC EAM Project consists of two workstreams (Cloud Migration and Key Improvements) related to the implementation of an enterprise-wide Enterprise Asset Management, Supply Chain Management, and Financial System.
Deliverables: Standard business intelligence development deliverables and supporting documentation will be expected. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
Power BI Reports & Dashboards and EAM Cognos reports.
Technical design documentation of each report, including data sources, relationships, calculations, and visualizations.
Input to simple data models for data warehousing and analytics.
Access Control Documentation.
Assistance with UAT Documents & plans.
Assistance with user training.
Report deployment documents.
Power BI interface navigation (i.e., SharePoint & SSRS).
Power BI Cubes design & implementation.
Data load processes to BI cubes.
Input to navigation design.
Input to wireframes and simple reporting interface mockups.
Process and system user guide documents (i.e., user reference guide, operations guide, help/FAQ content, etc.).
System deployment documents (i.e., deployment plan, service desk guide, etc.).
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.
5+ years of recent and hands-on experience in Power BI:
Deep understanding of Power BI desktop and service, including report building, data modeling, and creating dashboards.
Expertise in Power Query for data transformation and M language for writing advanced queries.
Strong knowledge of DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) for creating complex calculations and measures in Power BI.
Familiarity with Power BI integration into other Microsoft tools like Excel, SharePoint, or Teams.
5+ years of recent and hands-on experience with Cognos Analytics for EAM:
Experience with Cognos reporting tools (e.g., Report Studio, Query Studio, Framework Manager).
Familiarity with creating and managing Cognos data models, dashboards, and reports for EAM.
Crystal Reports understanding:
Strong experience in analyzing and understanding existing reports built in Crystal Reports, including data sources, calculations, and visual structures.
SQL and Data Management:
Proficient in writing complex SQL queries for extracting and manipulating data from various databases (SQL Server, Oracle, etc.).
Knowledge of database schemas, joins, indexes, and query optimization techniques.
ETL (Extract, Transform, Load):
Familiarity with ETL processes and tools for data integration and transformation, especially where large datasets are involved.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
Data Modeling: strong understanding of database structures and ability to design efficient and accurate data models in Power BI and Cognos.
Ability to understand and migrate complex Crystal Reports data models to Power BI/Cognos.
Data Visualization: proficiency in creating visually appealing and informative reports using Power BI’s charts, graphs, and visuals.
Experience in creating interactive dashboards and reports that offer drill-down and filtering capabilities.
Business Intelligence (BI): a solid background in BI best practices, report design principles, and storytelling through data.
Performance Optimization: Expert in optimizing report performance, both at the query level and the report visualization level.
Familiarity with techniques such as aggregating data, minimizing query load, and managing large datasets efficiently in Power BI and Cognos.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.
Nice-to-Haves
Experience in a Unionized environment – exposure to Union organizations such as CUPE, COPE, and CAW/Unifor is considered an asset.
