About the Opportunity
Our client, an established global software company, is looking for an experienced Senior Backend Software Developer to help design, build, and optimize the core services powering its cloud-based enterprise platform.

The platform connects desktop applications, cloud services, and external systems, supporting customers worldwide. The team is responsible for developing critical backend capabilities, including identity and authentication, permissions management, notifications, auditing, and third-party integrations.

We're looking for an established senior-level developer with strong Python skills, extensive REST API development experience, and a solid understanding of microservices architecture.

This is a hands-on engineering role, with approximately 70% new development and 30% maintenance and enhancement of existing systems. You'll work on complex technical challenges, particularly improving performance and reliability across interconnected services while ensuring a seamless customer experience.

What's In It for You
  • Competitive annual salary of $135,000–$158,000 CAD
  • Hybrid work environment supporting flexibility and collaboration
  • Opportunity to influence technical architecture and platform scalability
  • Collaborative engineering culture that values mentorship, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Exposure to modern cloud technologies and complex distributed systems

Your Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using Python.
  • Build and enhance microservices supporting authentication, authorization, permissions, notifications, auditing, and external integrations.
  • Develop reliable integrations between desktop applications, cloud services, and third-party platforms.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across interconnected services, improving system responsiveness, scalability, and reliability.
  • Contribute to software architecture and API design decisions, balancing performance, security, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain cloud-native services using Kubernetes and cloud technologies.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, and code reviews.
  • Collaborate with developers, technical leads, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver high-quality software.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other developers while fostering a collaborative engineering environment.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools where appropriate, maintaining strong engineering judgment and code quality.
  • Occasionally contribute to frontend development using React and TypeScript.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, ideally with previous experience in a senior-level engineering role.
  • At least 2 years of professional Python development experience, preferably as a primary backend language.
  • Strong hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining RESTful APIs in production environments.
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture, distributed systems, service-to-service communication, and integrations.
  • Experience developing backend services within complex, interconnected software platforms.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and cloud-native development.
  • Strong knowledge of software architecture, system performance, scalability, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and modern software development practices.
  • Ability to independently solve complex technical problems, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and deliver reliable solutions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience mentoring developers and working across engineering teams.
  • Experience working in established engineering environments with structured development processes and cross-functional collaboration.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with FastAPI or similar Python frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Experience developing identity, authentication, authorization, or permissions-management services.
  • Experience troubleshooting and optimizing performance in distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with Terraform and infrastructure as code.
  • Exposure to React and TypeScript.
  • Experience in geoscience, geology, civil engineering, or data-intensive software platforms.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools and development workflows
