About the Opportunity

Altis Recruitment is partnering with a values-driven national non-profit organization to hire a hands-on Controller for a newly created position. This is an opportunity to join an organization during a period of change and help strengthen and stabilize its day-to-day finance operations.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, you’ll serve as a senior operational resource for the finance team, taking ownership of core accounting and reporting activities while supporting programs operating within a funding-based environment. You’ll work closely with Finance Coordinators, Program Managers, and organizational leadership to strengthen reporting, processes, controls, and overall financial operations.

What’s In It for You

You’ll step into a role where your expertise can have an immediate impact. You’ll have the opportunity to bring structure to a growing finance function, work closely with an experienced Director of Finance, and contribute to a mission-driven organization that values collaboration, respect, and teamwork. This six-month contract also has the potential for extension.

Your Responsibilities

  • You’ll oversee core operational accounting activities, including month-end close, reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, and monthly financial reporting.

  • You’ll support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and the preparation of financial statements and management reports.

  • You’ll oversee financial activities related to funded programs, including contribution agreements, project expenditures, disbursements, and reporting requirements.

  • You’ll partner with Program Managers to ensure financial activity is accurately aligned with project budgets, contracts, and funding requirements.

  • You’ll support external audit preparation and respond to audit fieldwork requests, while also participating in internal audits that may require occasional travel.

  • You’ll strengthen internal controls, policies, processes, and reporting practices while providing technical guidance and support to members of the finance team.

  • You’ll leverage Sage and project management tools to support accurate reporting, stronger processes, and greater visibility across finance and program activities.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally including Controller, Finance Manager, or comparable senior-level responsibilities.

  • Previous finance experience within a non-profit, charitable, association, or other funding-based environment.

  • Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting, month-end, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, reconciliations, and audit preparation.

  • Experience with grants, contribution agreements, funded programs, project accounting, or contract-based financial reporting.

  • Strong Sage experience, including financial reporting capabilities, along with exposure to project management systems such as Asana or similar platforms.

  • CPA designation is considered an asset.

  • Collaborative and respectful approach, with strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with finance, program, and leadership teams.
