About the Opportunity

Altis Recruitment is partnering with a well-established Canadian financial services organization to hire a Default Recovery Specialist focused on legal recovery and mortgage enforcement. This permanent opportunity is ideal for someone with hands-on mortgage default experience who understands what happens when traditional collection efforts are no longer enough.

You’ll manage complex mortgage files through legal recovery, working closely with borrowers, legal counsel, appraisers, property managers and other external partners. You’ll have meaningful ownership over your portfolio, assessing risk, determining next steps and helping minimize financial loss while ensuring borrowers are treated professionally and respectfully.

What’s In It for You

  • Competitive salary of $60,000 to $75,000, plus a discretionary bonus

  • Employer-supported retirement and investment program

  • Competitive vacation and personal time

  • A collaborative team environment with exposure to both legal recovery and real estate disposition

  • Opportunity to deepen your expertise in mortgage enforcement, Power of Sale and complex default scenarios

  • A workplace that values sound judgment, accountability and work-life balance

Your Responsibilities

  • You’ll manage a portfolio of defaulted and impaired mortgage accounts through workout, legal recovery and enforcement.

  • You’ll assess each file and determine when it should progress to the next stage of mortgage enforcement.

  • You’ll communicate with borrowers during the recovery process, balancing empathy with the need to protect the lender’s financial interests.

  • You’ll instruct and coordinate external legal counsel and monitor legal actions, including Power of Sale matters.

  • You’ll assess property value, title issues, taxes, insurance, condo arrears and other factors that may impact recovery.

  • As files progress, you may coordinate appraisers, property managers and real estate professionals through property disposition and sale.

  • You’ll prepare clear, concise recommendations for management based on your own assessment of the file.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 2+ years of mortgage default, recovery or senior mortgage collections experience

  • Direct experience with mortgage enforcement, legal recovery, Power of Sale or mortgage workouts

  • Experience within a bank, mortgage lender, trust company or other direct lending environment

  • Strong understanding of mortgage defaults and secured lending

  • Excellent written communication, with the ability to interpret complex files and communicate clear recommendations

  • Strong judgment, confidence and ability to independently manage a portfolio

  • Proficiency with Excel and comfort working across multiple systems

Note from the Hiring Manager

“We’re looking for someone who really understands mortgage defaults and what happens when a file moves into legal enforcement. You don’t need to know every part of the real estate process on day one, but you do need to be comfortable taking ownership, making decisions and clearly explaining what should happen next.”
