Job Description

Location: Ottawa, ON (Hybrid, preferred 1 day per week in office. Fully remote candidates across Canada will be considered)

Compensation: $90 - $110 INC Hourly or $75 - $85 T4 Hourly

Language: English required (written and spoken). Bilingualism in English and French is strongly preferred.

Duration: 8–12 week contract, with potential for extension

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Financial Consultant to provide leadership and stability during a critical period for a national member-based organization. Reporting to senior leadership, you will oversee financial operations, support governance activities, and guide the organization through key initiatives including audit completion, board reporting, and long-term budget planning.

 

This is a unique opportunity to step into a highly visible leadership role where your expertise will directly support organizational decision-making and operational continuity. Working closely with executive leadership, finance committee members, and a dedicated finance team, you will balance strategic financial guidance with hands-on involvement in day-to-day operations.

Your Responsibilities

• You'll provide interim leadership and oversight for all finance and accounting operations during a period of organizational transition

• You'll support the completion of the current audit, liaise with external auditors, and prepare financial information for board and committee presentations

• You'll lead budgeting and financial planning activities, including development of a multi-year budget and support for upcoming organizational initiatives

• You'll review reconciliations, payroll activities, accounts payable processes, and financial reporting to ensure accuracy and compliance

• You'll provide financial advice and recommendations to executive leadership and governance committees

• You'll guide and support a small finance team while fostering trust and stability during the engagement

• You'll identify opportunities for process improvements while navigating a highly structured and established operating environment

 

Skills and Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience, including Director of Finance, Controller, CFO, or senior finance consulting roles

• CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting credential

• Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, audit management, financial reporting, and financial analysis

• Strong hands-on accounting experience and willingness to support operational finance activities when required

• Experience leading finance functions within lean or resource-constrained environments

• Proven ability to work effectively with boards, committees, elected officials, or senior governance stakeholders

• Experience within labour organizations, associations, non-profits, advocacy groups, or similarly complex stakeholder environments is highly preferred

• Advanced Excel skills and comfort working within manual or legacy financial processes

• Strong communication, relationship-building, and change management skills

• Bilingual English and French is highly preferred
